How Often Should You Have Your Chimney Swept in Cleveland?

The NFPA recommends annual chimney sweeping for all wood-burning fireplaces and appliances. Here's what's involved, how much it costs, and why Cleveland homeowners shouldn't skip it.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) is unambiguous: chimneys, fireplaces, and venting systems should be inspected at least once a year and cleaned when necessary. For wood-burning fireplaces and stoves in Cleveland, "when necessary" is almost always annually — and here's why.

What Chimney Sweeping Removes

A chimney sweep removes three types of deposits from your flue:

Creosote

Creosote is the byproduct of incomplete wood combustion. It coats the interior of the flue and, in sufficient quantities, is highly flammable. The NFPA classifies creosote in three degrees:

  • First-degree creosote: Loose, flaky deposits — easily removed with standard brushing
  • Second-degree creosote: Harder, tar-like deposits — requires more aggressive cleaning
  • Third-degree creosote: Glazed, hardened deposits — extremely flammable and difficult to remove; may require chemical treatment

The NFPA recommends cleaning when creosote buildup reaches ⅛ inch. At this thickness, the risk of a chimney fire becomes significant.

Soot

Soot is the fine black carbon residue from combustion. It's less hazardous than creosote but contributes to restricted airflow and odors.

Debris and Obstructions

Birds, squirrels, and raccoons frequently nest in uncapped chimneys. Leaves, twigs, and other debris also accumulate. These obstructions restrict airflow and can cause carbon monoxide to back up into the home.

How Often to Sweep Your Chimney in Cleveland

For most Cleveland homeowners with wood-burning fireplaces:

  • Annual sweeping is the standard recommendation for fireplaces used regularly (more than 3 cords of wood per season)
  • Every 2 years may be sufficient for occasional use (1 cord or less per season)
  • Before first use if the chimney hasn't been used in more than 2 years

Gas fireplaces and furnace flues should also be inspected annually, even though they produce less creosote. Gas combustion produces moisture and acidic byproducts that can deteriorate the flue liner over time.

What a Five Star Chimney Sweep Includes

Every Five Star chimney sweep includes:

  1. Drop cloths and protection for your fireplace surround and flooring
  2. Brush cleaning of the entire flue from top to bottom
  3. Vacuuming of the firebox and smoke chamber
  4. Visual inspection of the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and accessible flue
  5. Written report of any deficiencies found
  6. Clean-up — your home is left exactly as we found it

Cost: $150–$250 for a standard residential chimney sweep and Level 1 inspection.
